CRAFTY BRAINS
January 30, 2014
Darrin Graumann
Event Specialist
City Of Sunny Isles Beach
Cultural and Community Services
Dear Mr. Graumann,
My name is Sandy Glass - Minski, we spoke a few days ago about the
possibility of hosting an Autism event that would benefit the University of
Miami Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (www,umcard.org)
and Autism Speaks, the world's largest autism science and advocacy
organization (www.autismspeaks.org) at the Heritage Park.
I have been involved with these organizations for approximately 5 years. I
became an advocate when my own son, now 7, was diagnosed with an
Autism Related Disorder.
Thanks to early intervention, he's now a typical developing child. But we've
met many children's and their families along the way who have not been as
"lucky" and /or do no have the resources to help their loved ones. This is
why it became our mission to help in any way possible to improve the lives
of those living with Autism (1 in 88 people are known to be affected by this
epidemic).
For the last three years, I've organized an event called "The BakeAbout
Autism" which unites local pastry chefs who donate all kinds of desserts
and all the money collected is donated to different Autism organizations.
Last year's event was at Highland Lakes park. We also had face painting,
arts and crafts, and bracelets done by the children (rainbow looms). It was
a huge success and UM -CARD decided to join us at our next one.
For this year's, so far we have a DJ, a singer, a group of dancers from
M.I.A. And two face painters who have volunteered to donate their time at
the event. I'm also in conversations with other companies to request their
help, and we would love to rent an inflatable bouncy house.
91 RL-
