Refer to these guidelines, or your supervisor, for specific details on use and construction. When used <br />improperly, ladders can be very dangerous. <br /> <br /> Ladders should have an OSHA duty rating of a Type 1 (250 LB) or a Type IA (300 LB.). <br /> <br /> Make certain ladders are in a serviceable condition before they are used for any reason. <br /> <br /> Use only manufactured, portable, metal, or wood ladders equipped with non -slip bases, securely bolted or <br />riveted to the side rails. <br /> <br /> Metal ladders around electrical work are prohibited. <br /> <br /> Portable ladder feet shall be placed on a substantial, sturdy, and level base, and the areas around the top and <br />the bottom shall be kept clear. <br /> <br /> After raising the extension section of a ladder to the desired height, always check to see that safety dogs or <br />latches are engaged and secure. Secure the extension rope to a rung at the base of the ladder. <br /> <br /> Ladders that are damaged or broken must be tagged and repaired or destroyed. <br /> <br /> Never use a ladder in a horizontal position as a platform or walkboard. <br /> <br /> Remember to secure (tie off both the top and the bottom of the ladder before climbing. <br /> <br /> Always choose the proper ladder to fit the job. <br /> <br /> Never use a stepladder as a straight ladder. <br /> <br /> Do not stand on top of a stepladder. <br /> <br /> A properly placed ladder should extend 3 feet past the landing or walking surface. <br /> <br /> Never temporarily repair or rig a ladder for use. <br /> <br /> Always use both hands when going up or down a ladder. <br /> <br /> Never improvise a ladder or place your ladder on an unleveled surface. <br /> <br /> Do not climb a ladder with tools and/or materials in your hands; use a rope or lift. <br /> <br /> Always store ladders properly when not in use. <br /> <br /> If job-made ladders are required, contact management for details on proper and safe construction. <br /> <br /> All job-made ladders will be clear and free of knots; they shall not be painted; and they shall not have rungs <br />more than 12" apart. <br /> <br /> Do not use ladders that have loose rungs, cracked or split side rails, missing rubber foot pads, or are otherwise <br />visibly damaged. <br /> <br /> Keep ladder rungs clean and free of dirt, grease, and oils. <br /> <br /> Do not place a ladder in a passageway or doorway without posting warning signs or cones that detour <br />pedestrian traffic away from the ladder. <br /> <br /> Allow only one person on the ladder at a time.
