SR A1A North Causeway Bridge over ICWW <br />St. Lucie County, Florida <br />Client <br /> Florida Department Transportation <br /> District 4 <br />Donovan Pessoa <br />954-777-4466 <br />Start / Completion Date <br />2016-2019 <br />Project Value <br />$50,000,000 Hardesty & Hanover is providing engineering design services for the replacement <br />of SR A1A North Causeway Bridge. Scope of services includes bridge design, <br />geotechnical, drainage, hydrogeology, lighting, signalization, signage, paving <br />marking, utility/railroad/marine coordination, public involvement, maintenance, <br />control and protection of vehicular and marine traffic, as well as additional roadway <br />design services which will address adjacent state, frontage and access roads and <br />railway crossings affected by the project. <br />Constructed in 1963, this movable bascule bridge spans over the Intracoastal <br />Waterway (ICWW) connects the barrier island to the mainland in the City of Fort <br />Pierce. In March 2014, the bridge was structurally inspected and found to be <br />structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. <br />The PD&E Study is currently underway to evaluate bridge replacement alternatives <br />to resolve the structurally-deficient conditions and enhance regional mobility. It is <br />likely that a high-level fixed bridge with improved safety for pedestrians and <br />bicyclists and improved traffic operation will be deemed the most viable option. <br />The preferred horizontal alignment of the replacement bridge is just north of the <br />existing structure. The west end tie-down of the new bridge will be at US-1 and the <br />east end tie-down will be near the North Causeway Island Park. The design will <br />maintain local US-1 access beneath the new bridge spans via an extension of <br />Juanita Avenue to Old Dixie Highway. New roadways for traffic crossing the <br />FECRR to the marina will be either designed directly beneath the new bridge or <br />parallel to the new bridge piers. <br />F-23
