D-31
RFQ 20-10-01 Professional Engineering and Architectural Services for Pedestrian Bridge with Park Elements Across A1A at 174th St. CCNA D
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE & URBAN DESIGN
SMDS - an award-winning studio located in North Miami - will be the Landscape Architect
for this project and will play a key role as urban designer advising the team regarding the final
layout and site planning of the pedestrian bridge/parkway. The SMDS office is located about six
miles from the project site. SMDS projects in the City of Sunny Isles Beach include the City Hall
Landscape Master Plan and Gateway Park.
Over the last 25 years, SMDS has worked on several FDOT bridge and streetscape projects. These include the:
»Brickell Avenue Median, Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, and the
»Reconfiguration/beautification of the 41st Street bridges in Miami Beach over Indian Creek and Biscayne Waterway.
In addition, SMDS has previously worked with EAC on many projects, most recently as the Urban Designers and Landscape and
Design Architects for the preparation of the PD&E for the Tamiami Canal Bridge - where tasks included the relocation and design of
the Bridge Tender House as well as bridge aesthetics.
A key issue in the proposed bridge parkway will be the design of planting and pedestrian-friendly spaces, possibly even
incorporating seating and viewing areas. SMDS has significant experience in planting over structural decks, the most relevant
being the Aventura Optima ‘Green Roof’ designed over a parking Garage. This project was the second LEED Platinum Building
in South Florida, and received awards from Florida’s ASLA and nationally from the Green Roof for Healthy Cities Organization.
SMDS will work in close collaboration with the Bridge Engineers, Bridge Architect and Project Team to define the design guidelines
and requirements for the landscape architecture on the bridge, and lend their expertise to help the City to achieve their project goals,
which include;
1. ICONIC AND & EMBLEMATIC
The bridge design will take advantage of its proposed location over Collins Avenue to connect with the waterfront Samson Oceanfront
Park. This pedestrian bridge has the potential to become an iconic architectural element for the City of Sunny Isles Beach, as well
as critical infrastructure to make moving through the city safer, easier, and more pleasant for pedestrians. The shape and materials
used will be key in designing a bridge that is both emblematic and structurally sound. Coordination between the engineering and
architectural teams will be essential at this stage in the design process.

Figure 13A: Proposed Landscape Architecture Alternative 1 - Base Scheme
Figure 13B: Proposed Landscape Architecture Alternative 2 – Iconic Shade Structure Scheme
