RESOLUTION NO. 2022 - <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, <br />FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE LEADERS AND PEOPLE OF UKRAINE AS <br />THEY DEFEND AGAINST RUSSIA'S AGGRESSION AND ATTACK ON THEIR <br />SOVEREIGN NATION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br />WHEREAS, Ukraine proclaimed its independence from the Union of Soviet Socialist <br />Republics (U.S.S.R.) on August 24, 1991; and <br />WHEREAS, on December 1, 1991, more than 90 percent of Ukrainian citizens voted in a <br />national referendum in support of independence, with majorities in every region; and <br />WHEREAS, Ukraine is home to nearly 44 million citizens, is the second largest country in <br />the European continent, and is a unitary republic led by a president elected by popular vote; and <br />WHEREAS, in 2014 the Russian military, under the direction of Vladmir Putin, invaded and <br />then annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine in violation of international law and <br />agreements, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 13,000 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians; and <br />WHEREAS, on February 24, 2022, Russian forces, enabled by Belarus, launched its <br />unprovoked full-scale renewed invasion of a peaceful, independent country, Ukraine; and <br />WHEREAS, it is the right of all countries to decide their own future, foreign policy, and <br />security arrangements free from outside interference or coercion; and <br />WHEREAS, on February 24, 2022, the G7 issued a statement condemning the "large-scale <br />military aggression by the Russian Federation against the territorial integrity, sovereignty and <br />independence of Ukraine"; and <br />WHEREAS, on February 25, 2022, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization condemned "in <br />the strongest possible terms Russia's horrifying attack on Ukraine", called on Russia "to turn back <br />from the path of violence and aggression", and reaffirmed an "iron -clad" commitment to Article <br />5; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Commission for the City of Sunny Isles Beach ("City') recognizes these <br />acts of war are greatest felt by the people of Ukraine, and therefore, must stand with them as <br />their personal safety and way of life are now under assault by an authoritarian regime; and <br />WHEREAS, the City stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, and condemns Vladimir <br />Putin's acts of war and Russia's invasion of a free and democratic Ukraine. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY <br />ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: <br />@BCL@CCOF8B30.docx Page 1 of 2 231 <br />
