REASONS: The Police Department is seeking approval to expend Department of Justice forfeiture funds tc purchase pistols, rifles, pistol accessories, and rifle accessories for an amount not to exceed $151,645.95. The Police Department is seeking to modernize the armament used. Currently the officers use .40 caliber pistols with iron sights. Ballistics have improved dramatically since we implemented the .40 caliber and our firearms experts suggest migrating to a 9 mm round. Additionally we are seeking to add optics to the firearms which will improve officer accuracy dramatically. In an environment as heavily populated as Sunny Isles Beach accuracy is of paramount importance. TherE will be other accessories necessary to complete the migration which will also be included such as holsters, lights etc. We are also seeking to purchase an additional 15 Colt M4 rifles. With the hiring of officers, there is a need to purchase additional rifles to assure that every officer will have a rifle. This is important and will be an overwhelming benefit should our officer need to respond to a violent event such as an active shooter. Lastly, with the desire to become an accredited agency it is important to have equipment that is uniform. The rifles currently in circulation have been allowed to be modified with optics, grips, lights etc. by officers preference once they qualify with the additions. We are seeking to purchase the aforementioned upgrades and making every rifle exactly the same in accordance with accreditation practice. Item Number: 10.0
