RESOLUTION NO. 2023 - <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, <br />FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR SENATE BILL 544 WHICH WOULD PROVIDE <br />PENALTIES FOR AGGRESSIVE CARELESS DRIVING RESULTING IN SERIOUS BODILY <br />INJURY OR DEATH AND PROPERTY DAMAGE; URGING THE FLORIDA <br />LEGISLATURE AND GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS TO SUPPORT AND APPROVE THE <br />LEGISLATION; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO DISTRIBUTE COPIES OF THIS <br />RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br />WHEREAS, on February 10, 2021, 11 -year old Anthony Reznik tragically lost his life as a <br />result of a driver running a red light; and <br />WHEREAS, during the 2023 Legislative Session of the State of Florida, Senator Pizzo <br />sponsored Senate Bill 544, known as the "Anthony Reznik Act"; and <br />WHEREAS, the Anthony Reznik Act would provide for penalties for aggressive careless <br />driving resulting in serious bodily injury or death and property damage; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach ("City") believes that careless and aggressive <br />drivers need to be held accountable for their actions resulting in bodily injury and death or <br />property damage; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Commission and City staff finds that the passage of the <br />aforementioned bill is in the best interest of the City. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY <br />ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: <br />Section 1. Support of Senate Bill 544. The City Commission hereby expresses support for <br />Senate Bill 544, and urges the Florida Legislature to adopt, and Governor Ron DeSantis to support <br />and approve, the bill. <br />Section 2. Directions to the City Clerk. The City Clerk is hereby directed to distribute copies <br />of this Resolution to Senator Pizzo, Governor Ron DeSantis, the Speaker of the Florida House of <br />Representatives, the President of the Florida Senate, the Florida League of Cities, and the Miami - <br />Dade League of Cities. <br />Section 3. Effective Date.
