RESOLUTION NO. 2024 - <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, <br />FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT OF FLORIDA HOUSE BILL 629 RELATING TO <br />FLORIDA WOMEN'S HISTORICAL MARKER INITIATIVE; DIRECTING THE CITY <br />CLERK TO TRANSMIT COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION; AUTHORIZING THE CITY <br />MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION; <br />PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br />WHEREAS, the Division of Historical Resources ("DHR") in the Department of State is <br />responsible for preserving and promoting Florida's historical, archaeological, and folk culture <br />resources, tasked with the identification, evaluation, protection, preservation, collection, <br />conservation, and interpretation of information about Florida's historic sites and properties or <br />objects related to Florida's history and culture; and <br />WHEREAS, the Florida Historical Marker Program (the "Program"), administered by the <br />DHR, is instrumental in raising public awareness about Florida's rich cultural heritage and <br />enhancing the enjoyment of the state's historic sites for both citizens and tourists, with <br />approximately 1,200 markers placed throughout the state; and <br />WHEREAS, Florida House Bill 629 ("HB 629") proposes the establishment of The Florida <br />Women's Historical Marker Initiative within DHR, aiming to recognize the significant <br />contributions of 100 women, whether living or deceased, to the history of Florida through the <br />placement of historical markers under the Program; and <br />WHEREAS, this initiative mandates the placement of these markers throughout the state <br />over the next 10 years, ensuring that 10 markers are installed each year, with the first 10 markers <br />to be placed by December 31, 2025, and the final marker by December 31, 2035; and <br />WHEREAS, HB 629 also establishes The Women's Historical Marker Selection Committee, <br />which will be responsible for selecting the women to be honored, thereby ensuring a thoughtful <br />and inclusive recognition process; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach (the "City") recognizes the importance of <br />highlighting the diverse and impactful contributions of women to the fabric of Florida's history, <br />culture, and development; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Commission finds that it is in the best interest of its residents to <br />support HB 629. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY <br />ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: <br />Section 1.
