Summary Minutes:Regular City Commission Meeting July 17,2014 City of Sunny Isles Beach,Florida
5. SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS
5A. Proclamation to be Presented to Raymond Santiago upon his Retirement from the Miami-
Dade Public Library System.
Action: City Manager Russo said Raymond Santiago has been the Director of the Miami-
Dade Public Library for 16 years, and we have had a good productive relationship for most of
those 16 years. We created a model of inter-municipal cooperation that still stands today,
and is probably more important today with all the budget cut backs and issues of finances at
the County level. The partnership that created the Sunny Isles Beach Branch of the Miami-
Dade County Library right here in our City Hall Complex, is a model that should be
duplicated probably more frequently than it is. We are here to offer our best wishes to Ray
upon his retirement. Mayor Edelcup, the City Commission, and City Manager Russo
presented Mr. Santiago with a Proclamation.
Raymond Santiago thanked Mayor Edelcup and the City Commission,City Manager Russo,
and City Attorney Ottinot. He said 16 years ago when he became the Director, the first
visitor he had was Mayor Samson. He came to visit us and said we want a Library in Sunny
Isles Beach, and we were lucky enough to have him push us and work with us. Mayor
Samson and Senator Gwen Margolis worked very hard to make sure we were able to do this.
Mr. Santiago said we have a number of our Libraries throughout the County, and we have a
number of inter-local relationships, facilities, but the City of Sunny Isles Beach has really
been a model for us in terms of how we work, and having the cooperation between the
County and a municipality. You have always been there when we needed you,and you have
been more than supportive. The City's actions have shown what your dedication is to the
children and your love of education is so obvious, and for him it has been a privilege to come
and visit this City on many occasions and seeing the changes over the past 16 years, see the
growth of this City and marvel at what you have done. He congratulated the City
Commission. He said that they have had many visitors from all over the world and they
bring them to this branch, they marvel at your beautiful City.
5B.
