}F6O i
CrTY OF 5%)L4 hV
City of Sunny Isles Beach
18070 Collins Avenue
Sunny Isles Beach, Florida 33160
(305) 947-0606 City Hall
(305) 949-3113 Fax
MEMORANDUM
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners
FROM: Stan Morris, City Manager
DATE: February 20, 2025
RE: Recognition of Law Enforcement Appreciation Day as a City Observed Holiday
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends approval of this Resolution.
REASONS:
Since 1962, May 15th has been designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week
during which May 15 occurs has been recognized as National Police Week. This observance highlights
the commitment, bravery, and sacrifices made by law enforcement officers across the nation.
Beyond daily patrols and responding to calls for help, law enforcement officers take on critical
responsibilities that keep our neighborhoods safe. They conduct thorough investigations, manage traffic
safety initiatives, engage in proactive community policing efforts, and maintain public order during
large-scale events. Their work requires courage, compassion, and the ability to make split-second
decisions—all of which contribute to the well-being of our residents. The City of Sunny Isles Beach
recognizes these tireless efforts, appreciating their selfless commitment and personal sacrifices. The
safety and security we enjoy is a direct result of their dedication, and acknowledging their contributions
helps us to truly value the vital role they play in our community.
In recognition of their service, the Miami -Dade County Board of County Commissioners declared Law
Enforcement Appreciation Day on April 5, 2022. This county -observed holiday, first celebrated on May
13, 2022, continues each year on the Friday preceding National Police Week. Many municipalities in
Miami -Dade County, including the Town of Golden Beach, Village of Palmetto Bay, and Town of Cutler
Bay, recognize and observe this day. Additionally, the Miami -Dade Clerk of the Court and Comptroller
and the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida have also joined in recognizing this holiday, with more cities
continuing to adopt it.
Item Number: 9.1
227
