3/2/2015 Item Caversteet
(INN? ts``r. City of Sunny Isles Beach
''0--`, 18070 Collins Avenue
") _ Sunny Isles Beach, Florida 33160
-5•'°.; .9.g c.' (305)947-0606 City Hall
r,r no om o' (305) 949-3113 Fax
P O/ SON
MEMORANDUM
TO: The Honorable Mayor and City Commission
FROM: Hans Ottinot. City Attorney
DATE: 3/19/2015
RE: Ordinance amending Chapter 171 of the City Code
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Commission approve the proposed
Ordinance amending Chapter 171 of the City Code.
REASONS:
Chapter 171 of the City Code vests the City's Historic Preservation
Board with authority to recommend to the City Commission that
certain properties be designated as historic landmarks with the
consent of the City Commission. Chapter 171 of the City Code
includes specific definitions for a "historic landmark" or "historic
landmark district" that may be recommended for historic site
designation. However, Chapter 171 does not specifically define
"objects" that may also be considered for historic designation. Over
the years, the City has collected numerous historic objects from hotels
located on motel row. These objects include the horse and carriage
located at Margolis Park.
The City's Historic Preservation Board is seeking to designate the
objects collected as historic. In order to begin this formal designation
process, it is necessary that Chapter 171 of the City Code be
amended to include a specific definition of "objects". The attached
proposed Ordinance defines "objects" based on language from the
Code of Federal Regulations. Examples of an "object" include
boundary marker, monument, milepost, fountain, sculpture, and
statuary.
httpl/sirrryisies.ronaagerda.cam/CwerSheet.aspx?ItemID=1591 1/2
