The county attracts
approximately 14.6 million tourists from both a national and international scale, over 50% of which
chose to stay within oceanfront municipalities. The most notable feature of their stay is the chance to
experience our beaches.
Aside from being a major economic asset, our beaches also provide much needed protection against
storm surge and the impacts of climate change. They are the first line of defense in protecting over$52
billion in property in our six coastal cities alone. As we enter another hurricane season and as we face
the growing threat of sea level rise,it is imperative that we use all the resources possible to protect our
coastlines and our communities.
On July 9,2015,the South Florida Mayor's Beach Alliance was formed to unite Miami-Dade County's
coastal cities in ensuring that our region's most valuable asset thrives under our environment's
changing conditions. The maintenance and management of our beaches requires a concerted effort by
all of us.As such,we urge the County to implement a beach program with dedicated funding for beach
restoration projects and to look for long-term solutions to keep sand on our beaches.
•
,
