Parker, Building Official <br /> DATE: 9/17/2015 <br /> RE: 2015 Local Mitigation Strategy(LMS) , <br /> • <br /> RECOMMENDATION: <br /> It is recommended that the City Commission adopts the 2015 Miami <br /> Dade County Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) as per the resolution <br /> attached hereto. <br /> The City of Sunny Isles Beach has been participating in the Miami <br /> Dade County's Local Mitigation Strategy and the National Flood <br /> Insurance Program (NFIP.) By adopting the 2015 Miami Dade County <br /> Local Mitigation Strategy through this resolution, the City will obtain <br /> the required credit for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) <br /> Community Rating System (CRS)recertification process. <br /> REASONS: <br /> The Local Mitigation Strategy(LMS) is a government plan designed to <br /> reduce or eliminate risk to people and property from natural and man- <br /> made hazards. Mitigation strategies are supported by state . <br /> government and federal programs. <br /> The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funded a <br /> national initiative to help communities develop local mitigation <br /> strategies that identify projects to mitigate the effects of natural <br /> disasters and to identify sources of funds to address those problems. <br /> The City of Sunny Isles Beach Local Mitigation Strategy establishes <br /> Miami Dade County's overall mitigation policy. the LMS serves as a <br /> reference tool for those seeking to understand the vulnerabilities that <br /> exists within Miami Dade County. <br /> ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: <br /> The National Flood Insurance Program's (NFIP) Community Rating <br /> System (CRS) is a voluntary incentive program that recognized and <br /> encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed <br /> the minimum NFIP requirements. <br /> On October 1, 2007, The City of Sunny Isles Beach was able to join <br /> the National Flood Insurance Program's (NFIP) Community Rating <br /> System (CRS) by undertaking a series of meaningful activities to <br /> protect the citizens of Sunny Isles Beach from losses caused by <br /> flooding. Based on the program's criteria, our City was able to obtain a <br /> classification of 8 which allowed our residents to enjoy a 10%discount <br /> in their Flood Insurance Policy.
