DISCUSSION, REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF TYPES OF PLAQUES FOR HISTORIC
SITES — LOCATION FOR PLACEMENTS.
• Newport Fishing Pier;
• Atlantic Isles Entrance Bridge;
• Atlantic Isles Lake Bridge; and
• Pergola Home of Chairperson Del Monico.
Action: Mr. Schulman said he brought samples of materials and engravings based upon the
types of plaques that will hold up the best in front of these historic sites, and passed them
around. He said the plaque would be encased in concrete and noted that there are two types
of plaques that can be installed: one is a bronze plaque which is privy to the weather, and
another material called coreon, which is a very hard substance. He said the cost of the coreon
plaque, 8W x 11" is about $200.00 and the bronze plaque is $345.00. Mr. Schulman noted
that bronze will eventually turn color and corrode in about a year, and the coreon will not turn
color and it will last indefinitely. He said the logo would be in black and white and it will be
engraved, and comes in different colors but he would recommend the coreon plaque in
charcoal with white lettering. He said it would be embedded either in concrete, depending on
the location, or we will drill holes and bolt them into the concrete that is already there. He said
he will go out with Public Works Director James Watts and take a look at what the best way is.
Mr. Schulman asked Chairperson Del Monico about placing a plaque,in the area of her home
and she said she would speak to her husband to see what his feelings are before she gives an
answer. Mr. Schulman said that we would not go forward with this until the next meeting when
she is back in town.
Vice Mayor Brezin said that these are areas where there will be a lot of sand, dirt, and residue
and the lettering on the plaques is recessed and it would fill with dirt, sand, etc., and it needs to
be determined to be cleaned so that the lettering remains clear for identification purposes.
Vice Chairperson Masters asked about the plaques in our parks and Mayor Edelcup said that
they are not in good shape due to the salt. Commissioner Goodman said that we need
something weatherproof or it won't work. Mayor Edelcup said that we are not spending a lot of
money on them and if they deteriorate, they can be replaced. Cassey Gabor said it is
important where the plaques are placed. Mayor Edelcup said they should be placed in the
most visible place, and Richard Schulman said he would go out and take pictures of the sites.
Chairperson Del Monico said that she felt that the coreon was a Ismart move as far as
maintenance goes.
6.
