A Proclamation to be Presented to the Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue for their response
and handling of the Chateau Beach Residences Explosion.
Action: [City Clerk's Note: This item was heard with related Item 5C.] Mayor Scholl
reported on the explosion at the Chateau Beach Residences that is probably the most
significant incident/emergency that we have ever had in the history of the City. Maybe the
plane crashing on the beach under Mayor Norman S. Edelcup's tenure, who is in the
audience tonight,is neck and neck with this incident, however the plane crash didn't back up
traffic on Collins Avenue in the same way that this incident did, and didn't have the same
impact on our citizens, residents and tourists. At approximately 12:00 noon on Friday,
October 2, 2015, there was a build-up of gas in the top mechanical room of a newly built
condo, the Chateau Beach Residences. That gas ignited and it caused an explosion and blew
out three of the walls on the top floor of this condo in addition to substantial interior damage.
Mayor Scholl said he just happened to be standing across the street when it occurred, it was
just one of those days where he walked to lunch, he looked up and there it was. In addition
to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and our Sunny Isles Beach Police Department, we could have
been considered the first responders that day. It was a surrealistic moment for him personally
as the Mayor and watching this unfold in front of him, but we have an incredibly dedicated
team of professionals who did an unbelievable job. The Fire Department and our Police
Department were on the scene in less than five minutes. The commanding control of the
situation that unfolded before him gave him such a degree of confidence and he cannot
convey that enough to the public. Everybody should be very proud of these people and he
can say that we live in a community that is managed in an extremely safe manner because
this could have been a real mess. As he watched the Fire Department apply assets and he
2
