Downtown Fort Lauderdale Prototype Streetscapes
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Client: Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority
Scope: Detailed Design and Construction Administration Services
Scale: 4000 feet and 8 city blocks
The Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority envisioned a demonstration project
that would establish a design vocabulary for the redevelopment of streetscapes into the future I
for downtown Fort Lauderdale. EDSA developed the concept and applied it to the heavily
traveled Second Street Corridor which straddles the downtown's existing activity centers.
The resulting $3 million restoration project spans 4000 feet and 8 city blocks, addressing
walking surfaces, interfaces with operating buildings, limited Right of Way space, future
utilities, street tree planting, street lighting, furnishings, and detailing to support temporary
traffic lane closures for pedestrian use during evenings and weekends. The project served in
part to support the DDA's efforts to bring light rail to this same corridor in the future, as well
as make sidestreet connection to Fort Lauderdale's Riverwalk. Future improvement projects
have adopted the design standards set forth by EDSA, and will result in a cohesive aesthetic
streetscape for the downtown core in years to come.
