Summary Minutes:Regular City Commission Meeting January 21,2016 City of Sunny Isles Beach,Florida
Commissioner Levin said she just wants to reiterate everything that Commissioner Goldman
said. She has been talking to the City Manager since she got into office about climate change
and preparing for the future, and so she was very pleased to see that it was incorporated into
the Amendments. With regard to multimodal transportation, she had been advocating that for
a while now with the bicycles, the pedestrians, and she wrote articles about it trying to make it
safer to get around the City, and so she was happy to hear about that as well. One of the
things that she wanted to mention in particular and she had mentioned it to the City Manager
at one point, she believes it is out of our control because it is under the purview of numerous
agencies,is Seawalls. She knows that obviously if there is a catastrophic event a seawall may
not protect anything but to the extent that there are not seawalls in certain areas, she did a trip
around the City by boat and she noticed there were a couple of locations where there were no
seawalls. If there is a storm surge that is not too high when not otherwise breach the other
seawalls or high tides, the water that would come into the area where there is no seawall could
affect the surrounding properties and could come into the City and create a lot of damage;and
she would like to see something done about that. She doesn't know if there is anything on the
books, and she is assuming there is, that if a seawall needs to be restructured or built that the
requirements are that.they now be higher. She knows it is very difficult to get seawalls built
when you have protected areas with mangroves, is there anything going on among all the
agencies, especially at the federal level,to hurry the process along so that if a seawall needs to
be constructed, given climate change, that they can make the process go faster for doing the
mitigation and whatever needs to be done with regard to the protected areas, mangroves,
whatever. She would like to see something along those lines happen as well.
Vice Mayor Gatto said we are pretty much covered with all the comments, and she agrees
with all of that. But she just wanted to say that it was really nice to see the community get
together and participate, and she believes there were many individuals that went to more than
one Town Hall Meeting. To hear that there is a lot of apathy in Sunny Isles Beach in terms of
maybe not everybody goes out to vote, or that not everyone wants to get involved but she
didn't get that sense in this situation and so she is really proud of the citizens and she wanted
to thank you for pulling all that together.
Commissioner Aelion moved and Vice Mayor Gatto seconded a motion to approve the
Ordinance on first reading by a roll call vote of 5-0 in favor. Ordinance No. 2016-474
was adopted on first reading and will be transmitted to DEO for review, and will then
be scheduled for a second reading.
Vote: Commissioner Aelion yes
Commissioner Goldman yes
Commissioner Levin yes
Vice Mayor Gatto yes
Mayor Scholl yes
9
