<br />RESOLUTION NO. 98-77 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY <br />ISLES BEACH URGING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO FUND ROUND <br />II OF THE FEDERAL EMPOWERMENT ZONE AND ENTERPRISE <br />COMMUNITIES PROGRAM. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the future of Miami-Dade County is linked to its place in the global <br />economy and it is poised to playa key role in international commerce in the 21st Century <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, all sectors of the community envision great possibilities for growth and <br />the potential for Miami-Dade County to become a "showcase to the world"; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County has one of the highest poverty rates in the United <br />State in that one of every three children lives in poverty; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in order to create a community in which all people have a chance to <br />succeed and contribute, Miami-Dade County, municipalities and community partners have <br />embarked on a plan to seek designation and funding under the Federal Empowerment <br />Zone and Enterprise Communities Program, Round II; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this federal initiative program is critical to Miami-Dade County to create <br />economic opportunity and rebuild poverty stricken community in Miami-Dade County; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the pursuit of Empowerment Zone involves unprecedented community <br />participation and unified community support; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Round II of the Empowerment Zone and Enterprise Communities <br />Program, designed to include $100 million per zone over 10 years, is pending legislative <br />authorization and funding in the United State Congress. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Commission of City of Sunny <br />Isles Beach that: <br /> <br />Section I. The foregoing recitals are true and correct. <br /> <br />Section II. All members of the United States Congress are requested to approve <br />appropriations to fund Round II of the Federal Empowerment Zone and <br />Enterprise Communities Program, and further urges the members of <br />Florida's congressional delegation to undertake an active role in advancing <br />such legislative authorization for the program. <br /> <br />City of Sunny Isles Beach Resolution: Federal Empowerment Zone Page 1 of 2 <br />
