<br />RESOLUTION NUMBER~ - 00 f <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF COASTAL MAYORS OF MIAMI- <br />DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, REQUESTING THE MIAMI-DADE COUNlY <br />MAYOR AND COMMISSION TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE FUNDING TO <br />FULFILL THE COUNTY'S MATCHING FUND OBLIGATIONS FOR <br />PLANNED SHORE PROTECTION AND BEACH RENOURISHMENT <br />PROJECTS FOR YEARS 2000 THROUGH 2003; AND TO RECOGNIZE <br />THE CRITICAL NEED FOR ESTABLISHING A LONG-TERM DEDICATED <br />FUNDING SOURCE. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, South Florida's beaches are an important part of the quality of I,fe of <br />this community, providing aesthetic, environmental, hurricane mitigation and recreational <br />benefits for our residents and tourists; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, beaches continue to be Florida's number one tourist attraction anGi are <br />thus vital to our economic well-being, generating over $9 billion in beach-related sales <br />annually and contributing to a ripple effect to the Florida economy of over $16 billion~ and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Council of Coastal Mayors of Miami-Dade County recognize that <br />severe beach erosion continues to be a major problem in Miami-Dade County; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Federal and State Legislatures have appropriated their proportional <br />share of funds to continue the Miami-Dade County Beach Erosion Control Program;: and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County currently has a deficit of approximately <br />$10,000,000 in its share of funds for beach management projects scheduled for 2000 <br />through 2003; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS,the Miami-Dade County Commission has historically demonstrated a <br />commitment to the preservation of Region's beaches, and now must recognize the critical <br />environmental and economic need to identify the necessary funds to ensure there Is no <br />delay in the restoration and maintenance of our beaches. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF COAsTAL <br />MAYORS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, THAT: <br /> <br />1. The Council of Coastal Mayors requests that the Miami-Dade County Mayor! and <br />Commission provide adequate annual funding to carry out a County Wide <br />Comprehensive Beach Management Program to protect and restore the County's <br />beaches, and consider the Department of Environmental Resources Managem~nt's <br />2000-01 budget request of $6.416 million.
