<br />MRYOR&COMMISSION <br /> <br />Fax:3056737096 <br /> <br />Jun 8 '00 13:10 <br /> <br />P.02 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2000-003 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF COASTAL MA VORS OF MIAMI-DADE <br />COUNTY, FLORIDA, REQUESTING THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY MAYOR AND <br />COMMISSION TO IN1TIATE AND IMPLEMENT A PILOT PROJECT FOR <br />INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE OF MOORING BUOYS TO PROTECT <br />AND PRESERVE LIVING CORAL REEFS ALONG THE COASTLINE OF DADE <br />COUNTY, FLORIDA. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the livinfeoral reefs along Dade County's coastline serve;a<5l:natUral <br />barriers against beach erosion; and <br />WHEREAS, the living coral reefs along Dad~unty's coastline serve as natural <br />fish and lobster habitats and hatcheries; and comprise the foundation for future <br />commercial fishing; and <br />WHEREAS, the living coral reefs along Dade County's coastline are the only <br />natural resources for sport fishing, diving and snorkeling; and <br />WHEREAS, the living coral reefs along Dade County's coastline promote <br />tourism; and <br />WHEREAS, the living coral reefs along Dade County's coastline serve to filter <br />and thereby cleanse the marine waters as part of the natural life cycle of our ocean; and <br />WHEREAS. the living coral reefs along Dade County's coastline are being <br />irreparably damaged by anchors dropped on and/or dragged along the reefs; and <br />WHEREAS, the living coral reefs along Dade County's coastline should be <br />protected and preserved; and <br />WHEREAS, Broward County, Florida, has ~dy installed and is maintaining <br />mooring buoys to protect living reefs off its shoreline, and its project program has been <br />successful; and <br />WHEREAS, the estimated cost of installation of the mooring buoys is <br />approximately $500 per buoy (including materials); and <br />WHEREAS, the estimated cost of maintaining the buoys is approximately $250 <br />annually per buoy (based upon Bro'Ward County's experience), and <br />
