Dannheisser, City Attorney <br />Richard Brown- Morilla, City Clerk <br />To: The Honorable City Commission <br />From: Mayor David Samson <br />Date: March 19, 2002 <br />Re: Resolution Expressing Support For The Continued Existence Of The County's <br />Human Rights Ordinance No. 98 -170 That Prohibits Discrimination Based On <br />Sexual Orientation, and Opposing Its Repeal On September 10, 2002 <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />It is recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached resolution. <br />REASONS: <br />In 1998, the Miami -Dade County Board of County Commissioners adopted Ordinance No. 98- <br />170, also known as the Human Rights Ordinance. Ordinance No. 98 -170 amended existing law <br />by also prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation in housing, credit and finance, <br />public accommodations, and employment. In January 2002, after the Elections Department <br />certified petitions seeking a countywide vote to repeal Ordinance No. 98 -170, the Board of <br />County Commissioners were then obliged to schedule a countywide Special Election that will be <br />held on Tuesday, September 10, 2002. In the election voters must decide whether Miami -Dade <br />County's Ordinance No. 98 -170, relating to prohibiting discrimination based on sexual <br />orientation in housing, credit and finance, public accommodations, and employment, shall be <br />repealed. <br />Many residents of Sunny Isles Beach .have experienced various forms of discrimination in their <br />personal lives and know the hardship and personal harm that can result. I believe we should set <br />an example, and publicly affirm our commitment to principles of equality and fairness for all <br />citizens of Miami -Dade County as embodied within the Miami -Dade County Human Rights <br />Ordinance.
