1'retl Maas Cfiief of Police To: The Commission, City Manager and Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach From: ~d A, Maas, ChiefofPolice Date: July 18,2002 Subject: Forfeiture Funds Expenditure Recommendation~ It is recommended that the City Commission approve the expenditure of partial forfeiture funds, previously awarded to the Police Department as the results of investigative participation in forfeiture and seizure cases, Under Florida law, these funds maybe spent for purchases of police equipment and other law enforcement activities, It is requested that we be permitted to utilize $21,876.00 of said funds on deposit for such purpose, Reason~ Shortly after the formation of the police department, the U.S. Customs Bureau awarded this agency use of a Fountain 27' boat for law enforcement activities. The vessel was older and needed some repairs. Over the past three years, the wear and tear from use has caused additional needs and repairs including the replacement of both engines. The vessel itself is extremely seaworthy and useful in law enforcement activities. The repairs and replacement equipment would ensure marine patrol coverage for many years to come, The requested expenditures are authorized under Florida law and are designed to enhance Community Policing and law enforcement within our city. Additional Information~ The existence and usefulness of a marine patrol by the police department has been a well-known community-policing tool highly accepted and appreciated by the residents of Sunny Isles Beach. In order to continue this practice and to ensure the safety of those residents who live in areas with water access and to control the safety of our waterways, it is recommended that the above expenditure be granted.
