Russo, City Manager 00
DATE: July 17,2003
RE: MPO TRANSPORTATION STUDY GRANT FOR PEDESTRIAN/BICYCLE
BRIDGE FOR 172ND STREET TO 174TH STREET
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Commission approve the attached resolution authorizing the City
Manager to apply for, receive and expend monies from a transportation study grant from Miami-
Dade County's Metropolitan Planning Organization ("MPO").
REASONS
The Sunny Isles Beach Comprehensive Plan sets forth specific transportation goals for the City.
It states that one of those goals is to improve the safety and efficiency of the City's roadway
system through transportation system management techniques, including: access management,
improved intersection operations, traffic calming along residential streets, mitigation by
developers, accident analysis, and maintaining visibility for pedestrians, vehicles, and cyclists
(Transportation Element - Objective 3, pages 31 - 32). Further, it provides that the City shall
protect motorists, bicyclist safety, pedestrian safety and the residents' quality of life on local
streets by conducting in-depth studies of local neighborhood circulation. Therefore, staff
proposes a transportation study for the 172nd Street - l74`h Street location in order to determine
the feasibility and need for a pedestrian/bicycle bridge. An MPO grant would help offset the
cost of the study by an amount of up to 80% and require a 20%match by the City.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The City Commission has discussed a pedestrian/bicycle bridge at length in the past. It may
enhance the movement of people in this area and will become part of the City's overall greenway
plan.
CJR/pw
Mpo-Pedestnan-Bicycle Grant Agenda Memo
