The <br />specific requirements for root ball size shall be in accordance with root ball size charges, <br />Section 1.08. <br /> <br />B. <br /> <br />Burlapping will be required if trees, large shrubs, or palms will be relocated to an area <br />not accessible by the tree spade equipment or if a tree spade is not used. Trees or palms <br />that are dug by tree spade and then bur1apped for relocation shall comply and be handled <br />in same manner as new plant materials specified in Section 02490. <br /> <br />PART 2 - PRODUCTS "NOT APPLICABLE" <br /> <br />PART 3 - EXECUTION <br /> <br />3.01 HANDLING AND TRANSPORTATION <br /> <br />06/05 <br /> <br />A. <br /> <br />Trees, palms, and large shrubs shall be properly handled during moving so trunks wi II <br />not be scarred or damaged and to avoid broken limbs. Broken limbs or scarred/damaged <br />trunks shall cause plant to be unacceptable and rejected at Landscape Architect's option. <br />Broken limbs and wounds which do not (in the Landscape Architect's judgment) cause <br />the tree to be rejected shall be repaired under the following guidelines: <br /> <br />1. <br /> <br />Properly prune dead, dying, or damaged branches with clean, sharp equipment. <br /> <br />2. <br /> <br />Remove injured bark and wood of a tree wound with a clean, sharp knife to a <br />point where healthy bark and wood make contact at their margins. <br /> <br />3. Inspect and treat wounds for insect and disease. <br /> <br />4. <br /> <br />Seal wounds with bituminous base wound paint only at Landscape Architect's <br />direction. <br /> <br />B. <br /> <br />Transport plant material on vehicles of adequate size to prevent overcrowding, broken <br />limbs, foliage damage or root ball damage. <br /> <br />C. Root ball should be kept moist during all phases of relocation. <br /> <br />D. <br /> <br />Root ball sizes for small and medium shrubs shall be 1/3 larger than nursery grown stock <br />of the same size and species. Ensure root ball is solid and remains intact. <br /> <br />E. <br /> <br />Tree and palm crowns shall be protected with shade cloth to prevent desiccation and <br />wind bum. Crowns shall be periodically sprayed with water to help ensure against <br />desiccation. <br /> <br />F. <br /> <br />Groundcovers designated as divisions will consist of healthy offshoots with adequate <br />root mass to ensure successful transplant. <br /> <br />G. <br /> <br />Inspect all plant material for insect/disease problems. Take appropriate action before <br />loading to ensure all plant material is free of any harmful insect/disease problem. This <br />precaution does not preclude rejection at the site. Apply pesticides in strict accordance <br />with manufacturer's recommendations and all government standards. <br /> <br />02481-6 <br /> <br />03-4138.B <br />
