<br />RESOLUTION NO. 2006- <13 q <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF <br />SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, NOMINATING MAYOR NORMAN S. <br />EDELCUP AS "MAYOR OF THE YEAR" AND COMMISSIONER LEWIS <br />J. THALER AS "COUNCIL MEMBER OF THE YEAR" FOR THE <br />FLORIDA LEAGUE OF CITIES, INC., 2006 FLORIDA CITIES OF <br />EXCELLENCE AWARDS; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO <br />DO ALL THINGS NECCESARY TO EFFECTUATE THE TERMS OF <br />THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Florida League of Cities, Inc., provides awards for the past year <br />recognizing and honoring outstanding citizens and city leaders through their Florida Cities of <br />Excellence A wards Program; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach wishes to nominate Mayor Norman S. <br />Edelcup and Commissioner Lewis J. Thaler for the Mayor of the Year Award and Council <br />Member of the Year Award, respectively; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach was incorporated in 1997; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, within a short period of time, the City has been transformed from a sleepy <br />coastal community to a major luxury resort community; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mayor Norman S. Edelcup and Commissioner Lewis J. Thaler have shown <br />initiative, integrity, vision, innovation, leadership and commitment to its citizens and visitors <br />during their tenure on the City Commission; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, under the leadership of Mayor Norman S. Ede1cup and Commissioner <br />Lewis J. Thaler, the City realized its state-of-the-mi, technologically-advanced Government <br />Center, which include a branch Miami-Dade County Library and a United States Post Office; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mayor Norman S. Edelcup and Commissioner Lewis J. Thaler envisioned <br />having an K-8 school in Sunny Isles Beach for its 1,500 students, and are now spearheading <br />bringing a K-8 Public School to Sunny Isles Beach adjacent to a City park, which can be used for <br />recreational purposes associated with the school, and donating $10 Million to the Miami-Dade <br />County School Board toward the purchase of propeliy and construction of the public school due <br />to open in August 2008; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mayor Norman S. Edelcup and Commissioner Lewis J. Thaler have <br />sponsored legislation to ensure and preserve the integrity of the City's budget, Land <br />Development Regulations, Historic Preservation Board Standards, to name a few; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mayor Norman S. Edelcup and Commissioner Lewis J. Thaler <br />understanding of the importance of open space/park land for a community resulted in the <br />creation of the City's new Town Center Park for the use and enjoyment of residents and visitors <br />to the City, envisioning more parks and open space for this City; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mayor Norman S. Edelcup and Commissioner Lewis J. Thaler have <br />continually displayed their commitment to residents, staff, and visitors of the City, especially <br />during Hurricane Wilma by ensuring the dissemination of much needed information, distribution <br /> <br />R2006- Nominations for 2006 Florida Cities of Excellence Awards <br />
