FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY
Miami's public research university

January 9, 2008

Mayor Norman S. Edelcup
City of Sunny Isles Beach
18070 Collins Avenue
Sunny Isles Beach, FL 33160

Dear Mayor Edelcup,

This year, as Florida International University's Biscayne Bay Campus celebrates its 30th
Anniversary of Academic Excellence, we are looking toward the future, In light of the global
attention focused on environmental responsibility and the proximity of our 8000-student campus
to Biscayne Bay, we have taken on a new priority of "greening" our campus from top to bottom
- in academic programming, research, and physical space, As our neighbor across the Bay, we
invite you to be our partner in this effort.

Over the past five years, the City of Sunny Isles Beach has enthusiastically supported our
community outreach and educational programs through the Biscayne Bay Society, Although we
have discontinued the Society as part of our efforts to reassess and revitalize the campus, many
of your residents have enjoyed and continue to enjoy similar programs in our university setting
close to their homes, Many of your residents are enthusiastic supporters of our campus and the
efforts we are making to continue offering community lectures and performances, thus making
South Florida's premier public research university accessible to all.

On Thursday, March 6, 2008 we are hosting an event to celebrate 30 terrific years and usher in a
new era of environmental responsibility. I am asking you and the City of Sunny Isles Beach to
support our 30th Anniversary Gala Luncheon by being an Event Sponsor (see sponsorship form).
This event is designed as both an outreach and a fundraising effort for our newly created
Biscayne Bay Excellence Fund, The charter of this fund is to inspire community supporters who
are dedicated to ensuring that the highest quality educational experiences are available to our
students and the community, The proceeds of this event will fund:

o new and enhanced academic programs
o scholarship opportunities
o innovative research
o engaging speakers for students, faculty and the community
o improved campus infrastructure and upgraded technology
o preservation of our unique coastal environment
o and other essential programs for campus development

The success of the luncheon will benefit the residents of the City of Sunny Isles Beach, who are
welcome to take advantage of our academic lectures, use our extensive research library, attend
cultural events, and enjoy our recreational activities by the bay.

Officc of the Vicc Provost and Acadcmic Affairs for Biscaync Bay Campus
3000 N,E. 151 st Strcet, LIB 311 .
