<br />RESOLUTION NO. 2008-I2..q~_ <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF <br />SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, NOMINATING MAYOR NORMAN S. <br />EDELCUP FOR THE 2008 "MAYOR OF THE YEAR" FLORIDA <br />LEAGUE OF CITIES EXCELLENCE AWARDS; AUTHORIZING THE <br />CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE <br />THE TERMS OF THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN <br />EFFECTIVE DATE. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Florida League of Cities, Inc., provides awards for the past year <br />recognizing and honoring outstanding cities, citizens, and city leaders through their Florida <br />Cities of Excellence Awards Program; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Sunny Isles Beach wishes to nominate <br />Mayor Norman S. Edelcup for the 2008 "Mayor of the Year" Florida League of Cities <br />Excellence A ward; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach was incorporated in 1997; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, within a short period of time, the City has been transformed from a sleepy <br />coastal community to a major luxury resort community; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mayor Edelcup has shown initiative, integrity, vision, innovation, <br />leadership and commitment to its citizens and visitors during his tenure on the City Commission; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, under the leadership of Mayor Norman S. Ede1cup, this past year the City <br />realized its state-of-the-art, technologically-advanced K-8 school, the "Sunny Isles Beach <br />Community School", scheduled to open in August 2008 with 1,500 students; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the new school is adjacent to the City's new Pelican Community Park <br />which includes a Gymnasium and Recreation Center, and baseball field which can be used for <br />recreational purposes associated with the school; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mayor Edelcup and City Commission have sponsored legislation to ensure <br />and preserve the integrity of the City's budget, Land Development Regulations, Historic <br />Preservation Board Standards, to name a few; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mayor Ede1cup understands the importance of open space/park land for this <br />community and has led this City in creating the Heritage Park, and Bella Vista Bay Park, for the <br />use and enjoyment of residents and visitors to the City, envisioning more parks and open space <br />for this City; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mayor Ede1cup, ever mindful of today's economy issues, brought in the <br />OSS Boat Association's Offshore Powerboat Challenge Weekend, coinciding with the City's <br />11 th Anniversary, bringing international recognition to Sunny Isles Beach and the surrounding <br />communities helping their economy; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mayor Norman S. Ede1cup of the City of Sunny Isles Beach would be a <br />deserving recipient of the "Mayor of the Year" Excellence A ward because of his loyalty, <br />dedication, and many accomplishments for the betterment of the City of Sunny Isles Beach. <br /> <br />R2008- Fla League Of Cities Nominate Mayor Edelcup As Mayor Of Year 2008 <br /> <br />Page I of2 <br />
