John Scott Dailey Florida Institute of Government - Available online <br />The Florida Institute of Government (lOG) offers an online course on ethics, as well as Florida's "sunshine" <br />and public records laws, to help avoid unintended pitfalls. This course has been developed with the <br />support of the Florida Legislature, the Florida Commission on Ethics and the Florida Attorney General's <br />Office. Florida City and County Management Association (FCCMA) - Available online and in print <br />The FCCMA has created an online ethics course to help prospective FCCMA members become more <br />proficient when dealing with ethical issues. It follows the International City/County Management <br />Association (ICMA) Code of Ethics, which governs FCCMA members. (See www.fccma.org/.) <br /> <br />. Booklets, Guides and Research Centers - Available online or in print <br />George Mason University, in conjunction with the Virginia Municipal League and the Virginia Association of <br />Counties, has published The Ethical GPS: Navigating Everyday Dilemmas (A Local Government Guide). <br />In addition, several universities offer academic courses or conduct studies and surveys about public sector <br />practices and concerns. Among them are Florida Atlantic University's Public Ethics Academy (see www.fau. <br />edu/spa/pea/index.htmn and the Ethics Resource Center (ERe) in Arlington, Virginia (see www.ethics.org/). <br /> <br />· Sample Ethics Pledges - Available online <br />Leadership Palm Beach County is one example of an educational nonprofit organization that has begun a <br />community-wide ethics initiative. Part of this effort was the development of an ethics pledge and statement <br />of values. <br /> <br />Civility in Government Resources <br /> <br />· The Collins Center - Available online <br />The center partnered with former U.S. Sen. Bob Graham on a series of lectures titled "Civility in Democracy: <br />Election 2008," a partnership between Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice, the University of South <br />Florida Sarasota-Manatee Institute for Public Policy and Leadership, and "Because It Matters," a regional <br />civility initiative. (See www.collinscenter.org.) <br /> <br />· Nonprofit Organizations - Available online <br />National, international, statewide and local organizations are increasing the profile of and focus on civility <br />in public office. This was designed to "assure public <br />confidence in the integrity of local government and its effective and fair operation." <br /> <br />· George Washington's Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior - Available online <br />Think the civility challenge is a modern development? By age 16, Washington had copied out by hand, <br />"110 Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation."
