<br />Glossarv: Prescription DruQs <br /> <br />Averaqe Wholesale Price (AWP): The published suggested wholesale price of a drug. It is often used by <br />pharmacies as a cost basis for pricing prescriptions. While a reliable pricing reference for brand-name <br />drugs, it can be misleading in the case of generic drugs since each manufacturer establishes its own AWP <br />for the generic drug. This can result in a broad range of prices for the identical product. <br /> <br />Brand-Name Druqs: A drug protected by a patent issued to the original innovator or marketer. The patent <br />prohibits the manufacture of the drug by other companies as long as the patent remains in effect. <br /> <br />Formularv: A listing of prescription medications that will be covered by a plan or insurance contract that <br />often fosters substitution of generic or therapeutic equivalents on a cost-effective basis. <br /> <br />Generic Equivalent Druqs: Drug that is equal in therapeutic power to the brand-name originals because <br />they contain identical active ingredients at the same doses. <br /> <br />Leqend Druqs: Drugs that must be obtained by doctor prescription, as opposed to those prescribed by a <br />doctor but available over the counter. <br /> <br />Over the Counter (OTC): Drugs available without a prescription. <br /> <br />18 <br />
