<br />RESOLUTION NO. 2010-~ <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY <br />OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT <br />FOR THE ALLOCATION OF SEVENTY-FIVE MILLION <br />DOLLARS ($75,000,000.00) IN FEDERAL FUNDS FOR THE <br />DREDGING OF THE PORT OF MIAMI UP TO -50 FEET; <br />PROVIDING DIRECTIVE TO THE CITY CLERK; PROVIDING <br />THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO <br />EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN <br />EFFECTIVE DATE. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Port of Miami is the largest container port in Florida and is a vital <br />contributor to the local, state and national economy accounting for 176,000 jobs and $17 Billion <br />economic impact to the economy of South Florida; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in the anticipation of expanding trade and commerce, the Port of Miami has <br />been authorized by Congress to dredge to a depth of -50 feet; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, upon completion of the dredging of the Miami federal shipping channel to -50 <br />feet an additional 33,000 jobs over ten (10) years will be created; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Port of Miami Deep Dredge will allow cargo to double within ten (10) <br />years, providing billions of dollars in wealth, allowing South Florida to grow international trade and <br />commerce exponentially; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the completion of the expansion of the Panama Canal in 2014 will require <br />deepening of the Miami federal ship channel to -50 feet to accommodate the larger vessels from the <br />Pacific; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Port of Miami Deep Dredge is necessary to make the Port of Miami <br />competitive with nearby foreign ports; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the dredging cost is estimated at $150 Million, with $75 Million already <br />committed by local sources; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Port of Miami Deep Dredge IS considered a project of national <br />significance; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Sunny Isles Beach City Commission hereby expresses its support for the <br />allocation of $75 Million in federal funds for the dredging of the Port of Miami to -50 feet. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF <br />SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: <br />
