The corridor links residential neighborhoods with the downtown
commercial center and heavily used by pedestrians and bicyclists as well as motor
vehicles. The bridge itself is in view from the state capitol building. The high visibility
created tremendous interest from the public.

H2L2 served as the architectural consultant to DGES and Associates/T. Y. Un
International. Primary tasks included developing structural forms with the engineers and
coordination with the Citizen's Advisory Panel (CVAC) and other public officials. H2L2
conducted extensive public education workshops and participated in public meeting
presentations. H2L2's 3-D visualizations were essential in enabling the public to
visualize and comment on alternative structure types as well as detail elements such as
lighting and railings. Additional pedestrian enhancements for the multi-use corridor
included bicycle lanes and "bulb outs" or pedestrian overlooks. Coordination with the
Public Artist, selected by the City, was also required.

The primary architectural ambition envisioned a bridge structure that would appear to
"skip across the water". Other considerations included compatibility with the scenic
Olympian Mountains, Puget Sound and other environmental features. The bridge
aspires to work with varying natural light values, which differ dramatically from summer
and winter. The design team with input from the CVAC evaluated five structure
alternatives. These five were then narrowed down to three alternatives: a cable-stayed,
a delta frame and a haunch girder.

H2L2

ARCHITECTURE - INTERIOR DESIGN - PLANNING - INFRASTRUCTURE
