The design of the Discovery Bridge, which
replaced a distinctive concrete river crossing (circa 1921) in the same location, entailed
integrating modern engineering technology with the classical precedent set by the original bridge.
Design decisions were made in a series of workshops facilitated by H2L2 architects and
comprised of engineers and representatives of public agencies and citizen commissions, resulting
in the free-flow of design concepts. Over the course of the project, H2L2 presented 13 schemes
to the engineers, the City and the citizens of Columbus. The resultant design in concrete is a five-
span arched plate girder bridge accommodating six lanes of traffic and pedestrian walkways.

I
I
I

The proportions of the bridge follow classical guidelines and allow for a visually pleasing
curvature of the deck. The new bridge has become a major civic asset. It is used by pedestrians
and bicyclists, and is periodically closed to vehicular traffic for festivals, fairs, etc. A major feature
of the project is the access provided by the bridge down to a new riverfront walkway.

I

I
I

H2L2's scope included decorative railings, lighting, architectural details and finishes,
embankment landscaping, and a Riverwalk which has established a design precedent for the
revitalization of the urban riverfront in Columbus.

H2L2

I

ARCHITECTURE - INTERIOR DESIGN - PLANNING - INFRASTRUCTURE
