The bridge, New York's third oldest major span, is a major vehicular crossing between Harlem and the Bronx as well as a pedestrian route to and from Yankee Stadium. H2L2's scope of work included a new control house and access stairways, railings, protective fencing, curb safety barriers, roadway lighting, historic statuary and a fountain. H2L2's overriding goal was to gain approval from the NYC Art Commission for the design of these items. For each item, H2L2 analyzed the existing and historic conditions and made subsequent design recommendations for preservation, renovation or new construction. I In cooperation with Modjeski & Masters, H2L2 worked with a diverse group of interests and public agencies including NYCDOT, NYSDOT, the NYC Art Commission, and the NYC Landmarks Commission. At every step of the design process, H2L2 was challenged to balance the historic character of the bridge with pragmatic demands for enhanced operational efficiency and pedestrian/user safety.
