Successful crossing requires common sense and sound judgment. If there is any doubt, <br />post orders should be consulted and the supervisor should be called <br /> <br />INCIDENT REPORTS <br />Written reports are essential to both the law enforcement and the clients. These reports <br />concern past occurrences or present conditions, They are required for important reasons. <br /> <br />For one thing, they inform others of conditions, which may be corrected also, they are an <br />aid to investigations and finally they are required for reference purposes. <br /> <br />The writing of reports is one of the most important duties of the school crossing guard. It <br />is essential that report is accurate, contain all facts and draw a complete word picture of what <br />happened. Good report writing requires thought and concentration. The use of big words are not <br />necessary, write your report in clear, simple language. <br /> <br />Keep in mind the five "w's." Who, what, when, where, and why. Then explain how the <br />incident occurred: <br /> <br />~ Who: Gives all available information, which will lead to the identification of the <br />persons involved as well as witnesses. <br />~ What: Explains the incident that took place. <br />~ When: Tells the date and time of the incident. <br />~ Where: Tells the place where the incident occurred. <br />~ Why & How: Explains the events leading to the incident and say so. Be accurate, <br />Do not risk making an unfair representation of events. <br /> <br />Other factors, which contribute to accurate reporting, are: <br /> <br />~ Observation: You must see what has happened, Notice details; learn to estimate <br />the number of people in a crowd, Note the license number if necessary and make <br />and color car. When observing persons, note-distinguishing characteristics, such <br />as height, weight, and hair color, complexion, scares, etc. <br /> <br />~ Clarity: The reader should not have to guess at the meaning of your report. <br /> <br />41 <br />
