'. <br /> <br />5TH AVENUE LINEAR PARK <br />Dania Beach, Florida <br /> <br /> <br />The site for the linear park is a 2-mile stretch of parcels that abut 5th Avenue in Dania Beach. The site <br />posed several challenges that needed innovative design solutions in order to successfully work. The <br />first of these was that the site was not continuous - it was a fragmented context interrupted by <br />repetitive street intersections and of inconsistent width throughout. The second is that the site has <br />different frontages - at times it is bound by residential properties' side fences, at times it is bound by <br />the front property line of homes and their driveway access, and at times it is bound by suburban-style <br />shopping centers. The third is that the area presently serves as the drainage swale for 5th Avenue, <br />and, because of the presence of West Lake Park's wetlands to the east of 5th Avenue, the soil had <br />poor percolation qualities and it best serves as retention areas. The budget and the context did not <br />facilitate engineered drainage solutions; therefore the park design had to account for solutions to <br />these as well. The result was a design that unified all the fragments of the park through a sightline <br />organization of gardens spaces: these were intimately scaled so they best related to the residential <br />scale and qualities, while it provided for a strategy that facilitated the provision of art at strategic <br />locations to create a unifying experience throughout. The drainage was resolved through the use of <br />sustainable strategies to site design.
