RESOLUTION NO. 2017- 71(05- <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF <br /> SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE BOARD OF <br /> COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY TO <br /> REQUIRE ALL VEHICLE FOR HIRE AND SHORT-TERM <br /> VACATION RENTAL COMPANIES AND HOTELS TO ADOPT <br /> BUSINESS PRINCIPLES TO PREVENT HUMAN TRAFFICKING; <br /> DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO DISTRIBUTE COPIES OF <br /> THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br /> WHEREAS,the crime of human trafficking destroys lives around the world and is present <br /> in every country especially in tourist cities like Sunny Isles Beach, resulting in a$150 billion dollar <br /> a year industry; and <br /> WHEREAS, forced labor, commercial sexual exploitation and involuntary domestic <br /> servitude have been found to exist within Miami-Dade County and its municipalities; and <br /> WHEREAS, in March 2016, Uber became the first ride-sharing company to sign a pledge <br /> issued by the group ECPAT (Ending Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of <br /> Children for Sexual Purposes)to adopt business principles that will help prevent human trafficking; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS,the City of Sunny Isles Beach wishes to maintain collaborative relations with <br /> other governmental agencies and adopt positions of legislative advocacy to prevent Human <br /> Trafficking within Miami-Dade County and its municipalities; and <br /> WHEREAS, the City Commission of Sunny Isles Beach wishes to encourage vehicle for <br /> hire companies such as Lyft and taxi companies as well as short-term vacation rental companies <br /> such as Airbnb and hotels to help prevent Human Trafficking by adopting business principles to <br /> learn what steps to take if they suspect their businesses are being used to facilitate Human <br /> Trafficking. <br /> NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE <br /> CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: <br /> Section 1. , Recitals. The foregoing "WHEREAS"clauses are hereby ratified and incorporated <br /> herein. <br /> Section 2. Supporting Action against Human Trafficking.
