18. OTHER PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (Publications, Organizations, Training, Awards, etc.)
João P.H. Dobrochinski has experience in planning, measuring, processing and interpreting environmental data,
implementing/calibrating numerical models, and estimating design parameters for dimensioning coastal and port
structures. Over the last years, Mr. Dobrochinski has been directly involved on several numerical modeling projects
related to wave propagation, interaction of waves and vessels, hydrodynamics, coastal flooding, sediment transport and
morphology changes, oil spill simulations, water quality, salinity and residence time studies, and sediment plume
dispersion from dredging activities. Within these studies, coastal, beach and inlet issues along the Gulf and East Coast of
the United States were investigated using measured data and state‐of‐the‐art numerical models. Subsequently, the
effects of engineering alternatives were evaluated to access their performance and quantify impacts on neighboring
coastal and estuarine areas.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION (Brief scope, size, cost, etc.) AND SPECIFIC ROLE Check if project performed with current firm
Mr. Dobrochinski is the numerical modeler for the modeling study. The primary focus of this inlet management
study is to develop an updated sediment budget for the inlet and to evaluate strategies of inlet sediment
management with the objective of balancing the sediment budget between the inlet and adjacent beaches on
Captiva and Sanibel Islands. The numerical model Delft3D was calibrated based on measured waves, hydrodynamics,
and morphology changes. The modeling tool is used to evaluate the performance/impacts of different alternatives
on short and longer term (after construction, after 1 and 5 years) and during tropical storm events.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION (Brief scope, size, cost, etc.) AND SPECIFIC ROLE Check if project performed with current firm
Mr. Dobrochinski conducted a numerical modeling analysis of the dead‐end Brookside Marina Canal utilizing
Delft3D, HEC‐HMS, and HEC‐RAS. Models were used to assess hydrodynamics and flooding of residential areas due
to storm water discharge of a drainage pump station during average and tropical storm conditions. The project
included coastal hydrodynamic simulations (Delft3D), river basin and precipitation characterization, run‐off
computations (HEC‐HMS), and hydraulic simulations (HEC‐RAS).
Senior Coastal Engineer – Worked for FDOT to assure compliance of a CCCL environmental permit issued for a
project located along SR A1A (Hecksher Drive) on the south end of Little Talbot Island along Fort George Inlet. The
project entailed installation of an 800‐foot cantilever sheet pile bulkhead with a concrete cap fronting SR AIA, and
construction of a 12‐foot wide multi‐purpose trail immediately adjacent to the bulkhead.
