City of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida
Marine and Coastal Professional Engineering Consulting Services (CCNA) | RFQ No. 18‐02‐01

Aptim Environmental & Infrastructure, Inc.
37
01C032018D

Sector 3 Dune Repair Project
INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA
Program Description:
Since 2013, the APTIM staff have been providing quality coastal
engineering consulting services to Indian River County. During this
time, we have successfully implemented major beach management
initiatives for the County. Our team has unequaled direct project
experience on recent Indian River County beach restoration
projects. This experience includes beach management, feasibility
studies, design, engineering, permitting, construction management,
biological support services, physical monitoring, grant writing
assistance, and post‐storm assessments.
The initial Sector 3 Beach and Dune Restoration Project was
completed in three phases between 2010 and 2012. The initial
project was 6.6 miles long and spanned from R‐20 to R‐55. Following
completion of the initial project, the effects of Hurricane Sandy
passing off the coast of Florida in October 2012 resulted in
significant dune erosion to the project area. APTIM designed,
permitted, managed construction, and currently monitors the
Sector 3 Dune Repair Project, constructed in the winter of 2014/15.
Instead of obtaining a new permit to address the damages, APTIM
was able to obtain an FDEP permit modification for a one‐time truck
haul sand placement project to quickly address this need. There was
tremendous savings of time and money for the County to have the
repair project implemented this way.
APTIM developed a feasibility study to specifically address the
damages that occurred from Hurricane Sandy. The renourishment
project was to have “no impact” to the nearshore hardbottom
communities fronting the project area. The final project design
entailed a modest dune feature and planting of dune vegetation
from Treasure Shores Beach Park south to northern John’s Island (R‐
Client
Indian River County, Florida
Client Contact
James Gray, Coastal Coordinator
1801 27th Street, Building A
Vero Beach, FL 32960
P: (772) 226‐1344
F: (772) 778‐9391
jgray@ircgov.com
Project Date
Completed: 2015; coastal program
services ongoing
APTIM Staff
Tom Pierro – program manager,
senior coastal engineering
Michelle Pfeiffer – project manager,
coastal engineering
Will Reilly – assistant project manager
coastal engineering
Stacy Buck – lead marine biologist,
permitting and NEPA lead
Lauren Floyd – senior marine
biologist, UMAM review
Beau Suthard – geotechnical analysis
of proposed borrow area
Quin Robertson – geotechnical
analysis of proposed borrow area
samples
Heather Vollmer – GIS mapping
Gary Krystyniak – CAD drafting
Ecological Associates – sea turtle
monitoring services
GPI Geospatial, Inc. – aerial
photography sub‐consultant

Indian River County following construction of the Sector 3 Dune Repair
Project (2015).
