Based on numerous reports, reducing emissions
result in lower air pollution and greenhouse gases, which are significantly better for the
environment. As a result of the environmental benefits of electric vehicles, municipalities,
including City of Miami Beach, City of Fort Lauderdale, and City of Boca Raton, have required
private developers to install electric car charging stations as a condition of site plan approval for
multi-family development. Similarly, Florida's Legislature recently passed a new law, which
prevents condominium association from prohibiting unit owners from installing an electric-
vehicle charging station at their own cost and within the boundaries of their designated parking
area.
To encourage the installation of electric car stations in multi-family buildings, the proposed•
Ordinance will provide for the exchange of a maximum of six (6) regular parking spaces for
electric charging station parking spaces without a need for a parking variance. Unlike other local
governments' electric charging station ordinances this proposed Ordinance is a voluntary
program, not mandatory. The developer will have the option to provide electric charging stations
without the need for a variance from the parking requirements.
This Ordinance has been requested by Vice Mayor Goldman.
