A Discussion/Presentation by Jerry Kaufman regarding the Lighting of the Sunny Isles
Boulevard Causeway Bridge • ' :- . • : - to make it more attractive.
Action: [City Clerk's Note: A revised cover memo was distributed prior to the meeting.]
Mayor Edelcup introduced Jerry Kaufman, who reported and presented renderings of the
different lighting for the Bridge. He gave out a LED light with a magnifying glass and a
booklet.
Public Speakers: Jerry Kaufman; Danny Iglesias
Jerry Kaufman said there is a movement across the country right now to get rid of
incandescent bulbs for LED,the savings is amazing. He presented a video of the LED lights
in New York City, and other examples of LED lighting on bridges. He said this is something
for the Commission to think about which is to not only put these lights into the bridge on
Sunny Isles Boulevard but also to change the entire lighting system in the City and save
millions of dollars over a long period of time.
Former City Commissioner Danny Iglesias said that FDOT has used LED lights for several
years, and in fact, he was the project manager for the lighting of the MacArthur Causeway
Bridge which has become a signature in the evening when they take a panoramic view of
both the Port of Miami, of which he was also the project manager, and the MacArthur Bridge
in Miami Beach. He introduced Roberto who recently got the job on Key Biscayne using
design build for the Rickenbacker Causeway Bridge. He said any help the City may need in
permitting they would help.
Jerry Kaufman said that this City could be known as the City of Lights, and he asked the
Commission to think about the creation of a committee that would look into not only the
lighting of the bridge, how to light it, and the cost of lighting it and maintenance, but to go
further then that and to look into bringing the private sector in as well as government for
subsidy because it is a "green" program. The subsidies for lighting today in the green
program is so expandable, it could go from a small scope to a very large scope. LED lights
do not hurt turtles because it is a concentrated light. There is a light show that is currently
used in one of the parks in which they make a grid. The grid goes across the park and they
are thinking about doing it in Chicago in which these LED lights go horizontally across the
top of the park in an elevation of about 20-feet creating about 4,000 different versions run by
a laptop computer, programmed to change colors.
12
