The footbridge strengthens
the relationship between the various urban precincts alongside the tracks and provides for a dialog in this context. The bridge provides
an elevator and stairs for inclusive access.
The bridge design is based on structural, functional and visual amenity determinants and a search for a strong character created
by means of a simple construction. The proposed bridge provides an answer to this overall context by a balanced combination and
integration of shape, structure, and construction materials.
VLAARDINGSE VAART BRIDGE, THE NETHERLANDS
Also called ‘The Twist,’ Vlaardingse Vaart Bridge is a helical truss bridge for pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
The construction was possible via 400 steel tubes welded together at 90 degree angles to create the
illusion of a twist. This red twist also serves a function purpose, damping vibrations from traffic on the
bridge. The Vlaardingse Bridge is a crucial link within the regional bicycle path network of the province of
South Holland and forms an urban recreational route connection.
