MANAGEMENT APPROACH
We have learned that careful project planning, preparation, and
communication is critical to project management. The foundation of our plan
for project success is to focus on the fundamental elements of the project
critical to reaching the goals and objectives established at the kick-off
meeting. By managing expectations, planning the work, and making timely
decisions, the appropriate resources are applied to the project, which results
in achieving project success. The project team will be centered on effective,
strong project management and communication. The team’s project manager,
Rodney McManus, LEED AP, reporting directly to the principal in charge, will
organize, direct, and coordinate the job tasks of ADG personnel and sub-
consultants. Rodney will serve as the conduit / point of contact to channel
all communication between the ADG / WA team and city. Understanding the
importance of continuity, the quality control team will be involved from the
notice to proceed through project completion.
COLLABORATIVE DESIGN APPROACH
Engaging facility users and project stakeholders are vital to the success of the project and
our team has developed an expansive plan to involve stakeholders throughout the duration
of the project. This plan starts with our interactive method of designing known as our
“Participatory Planning Process.” The basis of this approach is to listen carefully to the owner’s
concerns, communicate with the project manager and team, understand the facility and
community needs, and utilize creativity to meet the city’s goals and objectives. Those users
and stakeholders who participate in the project throughout the planning process, develop
ownership, which later evolves into a sense of pride. Our end goal is for clients and users to
feel connected to the final architectural product. Our team will work hand-in-hand with the
city and public safety departments to ensure a smooth transition throughout the project.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Keeping citizens informed about capital projects through effective communication is
essential to the success of any public building project, just as gaining community consensus
is an integral part of the planning and design process. Nonetheless, experience has taught
us that it is unrealistic to assume a major capital project will be fully accepted by everyone,
every step of the way. Often, the need for the facility, its cost, location, impact on neighbors,
and other issues can be controversial and subject to criticism.
In order to minimize community opposition, our team recommends developing a community
engagement campaign at the onset of the project to educate and involve the public. Our team
can work with the city in developing this community engagement plan. Both ADG and WA are
well-versed in presenting to project committees, city council, and the community during the
design process.
The engagement plan could include a schedule of milestones and community meetings throughout the site analysis and design
process. Our team will be available to present the space requirements, development options, and conceptual design, as well as answer
project-related questions in relatable terms. We have also found it helpful for work with the city to create a website or social media
page dedicated to the design and construction of the project to keep citizens informed. Our team has expertise in this area specifically
for public safety and law enforcement facilities. Any valuable input from citizens at this meeting will be addressed in future design
phases.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
6
