•
11C. Add-on item
Mayor Samson asked the City Clerk what procedure would be required to amend the City Charter
to change the dates of City Elections from odd-numbered years to even-numbered years to save
money by piggy-backing with a County election. City Clerk Brown-Morilla said that an
Ordinance would need to be prepared calling for an election to have the City voters decide on the
proposed Charter amendment. Mayor Samson characterized the Charter as containing a mistake:
by scheduling City Elections to occur in odd-numbered years our elections stand by themselves
and the City has to pay Miami-Dade County approximately$8,500. If we could piggy-back our
election with a County election in even-numbered years, the City would then only have to spend
approximately S1,000. Mayor Samson said he would ask the City Attorney for legislation to
propose amending the Charter so that our elections would be changed to even-numbered years,
and the subsequent election would change from 2001 to 2002.
Public Speakers: Faye Malkin
12. REQUESTS, PETITIONS & OTHER COMMUNICATIONS:
12A. Phillip Chemoff asked if a candidate for City Commission had to reside in a district. Mayor
Samson and City Clerk Brown-Morilla clarified the City Charter requirements of area residency,
which applies to three City Commission seats, but not to the At-Large Commissioner seat, nor
to the Mayor's seat.
•
13. ADJOURNMENT:
Commissioner Kauffman moved and Commissioner Morrow seconded a motion to adjourn the
meeting, which was approved by a unanimous voice vote.
- y rri``
4'y
Respectful)/ submitted by: Approved the Cit -C mmission on May 13, 1999
qtr, \■
:ate.
et.N. 1-CAP1/46A-4 bli
Ri bard Brown-'Morilla, City Clerk Davi Samson, Mayor
,6 A.1 0 `Cj
ATTENTION ALL LOBBYISTS: CITY LAW REQUIRES YOUR REGISTRATION PRIOR TO LOBBYING.
