Summary Minutes:Reeular City Commission Meeting November 19,2015 City of Sunny Isles Beach,Florida
a 90-year old women, and on the evening of September 14,2015 she heard a noise inside the
apartment as she was caring for her patient. She located the subject walking out of the
master bedroom. She asked him what he was doing there, and he said he came in to let her
know the door was unlocked. She said she was going to call the Police and he tried to run
• past her and a struggle ensued. He was able to get out of the apartment, and though not
advisable but certainly commendable, she gave chase down the hallway and the stairs and
was able to catch him again and fought him. Ultimately some property that belonged to the
patient fell out of his pant leg. Ms. Walker went to retrieve the property and the subject was
able to get away but her involvement didn't stop there. She positively identified him from a
photographic lineup which allowed us to establish probable cause and arrest the subject.
Mayor Scholl read the Certificate of Appreciation into the record, and he said it goes without
saying that we are not condoning what she did but it was extraordinary and we are certainly
to applaud her efforts for doing that. Chief Maas said he will present that award to her and
also a couple of Police commemoratives to her as well, and remind her that we don't
condone it but we certainly appreciate it.
5B. A Certificate of Acknowledgement to be Presented to Demetri G. Spiliotis for his
Perseverance as the Captain of the Boys' Varsity Swim Team at Miami Country Day School.
Action: Commissioner Levin said she became friends with Demetri's mother Suzanne a few
years ago, and she appointed her to the City Advisory Committee(CAC)two years ago. As
friends they talk and Suzanne is always telling her how proud she is of her son and how hard
he works. Within the last year and a half, Demetri lost two of his grandparents (Suzanne's
parents)and he grew up in a single-parent home. He was very close to his grandfather and it
was very difficult for him when he passed away. Notwithstanding that,he persevered on the
Miami Country Day School Swim Team of which he is the Captain. As such, his goal was
always to attend the State Meet, and he recently achieved his goal.
Commissioner Levin read the Certificate of Acknowledgement into the record, and the
Mayor and the Commission presented Demetri with the Certificate.
5C. Add-On:
Acknowledgement of Planning and Zoning Administrator Claudia Hasbun.
Action: Mayor Scholl acknowledged Planning and Zoning Administrator Claudia Hasbun as
she just passed the American Institute of Certified Planners exam which is the equivalent of
the CPA exam or the Bar exam for her profession. Mayor Scholl and the City Commission,
City Manager Russo, and City Attorney Ottinot congratulated her on this great achievement.
2
