Summay Minutes:Regular City Commission Meeting January 21,2016 City of Sunny Isles Beach.Florida
This year we experienced the occurrence of one of the most tragic events in the history of
Sunny Isles Beach when an apparent buildup of natural gas caused an explosion on the top
floor of the Chateau Beach Residences. Fortunately, no one died and all the injured have
fully recovered. The day the incident occurred, for the safety of the public, a six-block
stretch of Collins Avenue was closed in both directions for several hours. Our Police
Department, along with the Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue teams, performed an
extraordinary job in managing the conditions and ensuring everyone in the building was
located and safely evacuated. He noted the development activity that continues to bring
notoriety and economic prosperity to our City. We currently have nine (9) new projects
under construction and nine(9)projects that have received approvals but have not yet broken
ground. The development community continues to raise the bar in terms of the quality of the
architecture and amenities associated with each new building design.
5B. Certificates of Appreciation to be Presented to Allan Jonathan Gordon and to David
Braverman for their Bravery in Averting an Armed Robbery.
Action: Commissioner Aelion reported that on December 19, 2015 he and his wife were
watching television, and during the news an incident was covered that happened at a
convenience store near the University of Miami. As they were showing the video and were
looking at the two young individuals who had thwarted and apprehended an aimed man who
was robbing the store, he said to his wife that one of the guys looked like Allan. He went to
his daughter's room and told her they saw somebody that looks like Allan on television, and
she said they didn't want to tell her parents but in fact Allan and his friend David Braverman
entered the convenience store this armed man came in behind them to rob the place. It was
really heroic of them to overpower the robber until the Police had arrived.
Commissioner Aelion said sometimes you don't know how you will react when things
happen but it showed the two sons of Sunny Isles Beach, who grew up in Winston Towers,
with his daughter, their spirit and their will to save not only their own lives but the store
clerk, and potential lives of other people who may have come in. For this we wholeheartedly
want to present the Certificates of Appreciation and thank them. Mayor Scholl read the
Certificate into the record, and the Commission presented David with the Certificate.
Commissioner Aelion noted that Allan is not here tonight as he is in Chicago.
6. ZONING: ZONING HEARINGS ARE QUASI-JUDICIAL PUBLIC HEARINGS.
6A.
