John Szerlag, City Managa~ <br /> <br /> <br />July 19, 2007 J ) <br /> <br />FROM: <br /> <br />DATE: <br /> <br />RE: <br /> <br />Resolution Requesting Congress to Provide Funding for Bringing the Herbert <br />Hoover Dike Into Compliance with Current Levee Standards <br /> <br />Recommendation: <br /> <br />It is recommended that the City Commission consider the attached Resolution. <br /> <br />Reasons: <br /> <br />Recently, the South Florida Water Management District passed a resolution requesting Congress <br />to provide the necessary funding for bringing the Herbert Hoover Dike into compliance with <br />current levee standards. This dike, which provides flood protection for communities surrounding <br />Lake Okeechobee, does not currently meet levee safety standards and has structural deficiencies. <br /> <br />Additional Information: <br /> <br />The failure of the Herbert Hoover Dike would have catastrophic consequences for communities <br />surrounding Lake Okeechobee.
