The design and
construction process for this project,
presently ongoing, includes an
exhaustive community consensus-
building process, historical analysis, site
analysis, development of
Opportunity/Constraint maps,
Alternative Design & Phasing Plans,
Final Design/Cost Estimate Plan, and
Construction Documents/Administration.
Services: Master Plan, Schematic
Design Plans, Design Development,
Construction Documents and
Construction Phase Services. Project Cost: $3,300,000.

~
'''''' - -, -'-- _::-
. .: t ... -..-.,

3b.

The Firm's Experience with Municipal Projects

Venetian Causeway Toll Plaza and Administration Building, Miami, FL.
We inspected the present facility and prepared estimates for
refurbishment, and also 3 alternatives for replacement of the current toll
plaza. One of the alternatives for replacement was then selected and
developed to schematic level with numerous potential aesthetic designs
and landscaping schemes. Numerous meetings ensued with the Venetian
Causeway Homeowner's Association and the County T ARC Committee to
arrive at an acceptable design. After this was achieved, construction
documents for the new toll facility and adjacent administration building,
with landscaping, bike paths, and walkways were prepared. The toll plaza
contains six vehicle lanes with attendant booths and complete electronic toll collection equipment. The
separate Administration Building provides management headquarters for all Miami-Dade County toll
facilities, communication, public decal sales, and staff support facilities. The construction cost for this
project was $1.5 million.

Miami International Airport Chiller Plant Expansion, Miami, FL.
Berger Avart provided Structural Engineering services for the expansion
of the Central Chiller Plant at Miami International Airport and prepared all
documents including design, calculations, construction, drawings,
specifications and cost estimates. We were retained to provide structural
design and construction documents for approximately 100,000 square feet
of additional space to expand the existing 6-story, 139-foot high central
chiller plant to accommodate a new chilled capacity of 16,000 tons of
refrigeration for the Miami International Airport. This required providing a 150% increase in capacity on
a very restricted site, while maintaining an uninterrupted supply of chilled water. The structure supports
extremely heavy equipment loads, piping of up to 60" in diameter, ice storage tanks, and integral
cooling towers. The complex structure includes both cast-in-place and precast concrete elements.
Piping and equipment in the existing structure was replaced, requiring extensive re-evaluation of the
existing structure. Included in the effort was the transfer piping system carrying chilled water to and

- 9-
