SBLM Qualifications
Firm Overview

SBLM Approach
Successful architecture occurs when the client's
desire for a beautiful, functional, affordable project is
realized. At SBLM, we understand that design solutions
must evolve from a thorough understanding of the
client goals, project parameters, site characteristics,
construction methods, as well as a realistic approach
to scheduling and budgets. Many elements can speed
or hinder the process along the way: material cost and
availability, zoning and code regulations, and the choice
of contractors and consultants, to name a few. We
keep the project on track by maintaining control of the
process throughout the project's entirety. Quality Control
commences at the start of every project and continues
throughout document preparation and construction
administration. SBLM's project management procedures,
paired with the firm's depth of resources, enable us to
meet our commitments and execute our responsibilities
thoughtfully and thoroughly.

Design Philosophy and Process
SBLM involves its clients as active participants in the
design process. Every project begins with a dialogue
to understand the client's business philosophy and
operations and to define project goals. We develop the
design based on this collaboration, creating solutions
that address the program parameters, timeframe and
budget. In urban and sub-urban settings where adaptive
re-use is the norm, we have the experience to ensure that
the required program will complement the existing built
conditions. In cases that call for ground-up construction,
we perform thorough site studies and environmental
analyses that lead to informed and efficient designs. In
every instance, we are committed to construction and
space planning strategies that infuse the design with
meaning and originality, without ever losing site of the
factors that drive cost and operational efficiency.

Sustainable Design Initiatives
SBLM's commitment to sustainability is demonstrated
by our portfolio of environmentally sensitive work,
including 13 LEED certified/registered projects, and
our 30 LEED-accredited staff. Our internal Stewards of
Sustainability (SOS) Committee keeps SBLM abreast of
the latest developments in green technology, materials
and practices while providing a resource for the entire
office.

Our experienced staff will assure that your project
encompass the latest sustainable strategies. All
appropriate techniques and acknowledged strategies

SBLM Architects

of sustainable architecture- non-toxic construction;
the use of durable, natural, resource-efficient materials;
reliance on the sun for day lighting; thermal and electric
power; recycling; and the conservation of energy-are
all part of our design practice. SBLM offers the following
sustainable design/LEED services.

Integrated/whole building design

Efficient building enclosure design

Project life cycle assessment

LEED project specifications

Sizing for renewable energy sources

Advanced day-lighting design and artificial lighting
efficiency

Building re-use

Onsite recycling storage design

Financial incentives and building performance
certifications

LEED signage and graphic design

LEED building certification for new and existing
construction, commercial interiors, and core and shell

Waste Reduction Strategies
SBLM takes particular care to reach sustainability goals
through waste reduction, regularly diverting an average
of up to 75% of waste materials that would otherwise be
shipped to landfills. Material salvage and reclamation are
an integral part of SBLM's building ideology.

Green Operating and Maintenance Plans
SBLM frequently has been able to develop the functional
portion of a LEED-certified project's green operating and
maintenance plan, as well as developing educational
graphic imagery for installation within the space.

Energy Tax Credits/Incentive Programs
Our clients receive grants under these programs for
their energy efficient measures in the projects they
build. SBLM has expanded its feasibility study and due
diligence services to include the identification of available
energy tax credits and other incentive programs from
government agencies and utility companies.

Civic Studio
SBLM has collaborated with public institutions, CIVIC
bodies, and local and state agencies for over three
decades.
