Ll <br />C. Precautions <br />' The electrical contractor must take every reasonable precaution to avoid <br />interferences. In the vicinity of a suspected interference, excavations shall <br />be dug by hand. <br />' D. Excavating, Drilling and Backfilling <br />1. Materials for backfill shall be as specified in Section 2C, Excavation <br />and Backfill for Utility Systems. <br />2. Locate and protect existing utilities and other underground work in <br />a manner which will insure that no damage or service interruption <br />will result from excavating and backfilling. <br />3. Protect property from damage which might result from excavating <br />and backfilling. <br />4. Protect persons from injury at excavations, by shoring up, <br />barricades, warnings and illumination. <br />' 5. Coordinate excavations with weather conditions, to minimize the <br />possibility of washouts, settlements and other damages and <br />hazards. <br />6. Dewater excavations as necessary. Protect excavations from inflow <br />of surface water. Pump minor inflow of groundwater from <br />excavations; protect excavations from major inflow of groundwater <br />by installing temporary sheeting and waterproofing. Provide <br />adequate barriers which will protect other excavations and below <br />grade property from being damaged by water, sediment, or erosion <br />from or through the electrical work excavations. <br />7. No organic material is permitted in backfill. All vegetation, peat, <br />sod or other organic matter shall be removed from the premises. <br />8. Except under roadways, backfill material shall be clean sand or <br />shell rock. No debris or trash may be used as backfill. <br />9. Under roadways, backfill material shall be the same as comprising <br />the road bed. <br />10. Backfill excavations to 8 inches high courses of backfill material, <br />uniformly compacted to 95 percent density per ASTM Standard <br />D1557 using power- driven hand - operated compaction equipment. <br />Watering backfill is not an adequate method of compaction. <br />I <br />07/06 16050 -8 05 -5564 <br />
