New additions, exterior alterations, or related new construction will not destroy historic
materials, features, and spatial relationships that characterize the property. The new work
will be differentiated from the old and will be compatible with the historic materials,
features, size, scale and proportion, and massing to protect the integrity of the property and
its environment.
New additions and adjacent or related new construction will be undertaken in such a manner
that, if removed in the future, the essential form and integrity of the historic property and its
environment would be unimpaired.
ANALYSIS
The plan presented before the board follows each of the standards, and because of its free-
standing nature could (theoretically) be removed if ever there was a desire to return the house
to its original ( see last paragraph "Standards")
The classically inspired columns are a perfect match given the symmetrical arrangement of the
home itself. The Classical order of the columns are an appropriate and sensitive choice.
There will be no destruction of elements of the original architecture as the area selected is the
grass that surrounds the house at the side and rear. Therefore no historic materials or
distinctive features will be affected. Because of the height of the columns and the height of
the home (two stories) the pergolas will be minimally visible from the street.
In fact, the pergolas add to the monumental character of the residence
RECOMMENDATION
The staff highly recommends APPROVAL of the proposal with no conditions.
4
